The river basin is the geographical area from which all surface run-off flows through a sequence of streams, rivers and, possibly, lakes into the sea at a single river mouth or estuary.
The river basin district is the main unit for management of river basins under the Water Framework Directive. River basin districts were designated by Member States. A river basin district can consist of one or more river basins.
