Catchment Data Search
The Catchment Data Explorer helps you explore and download information about the water environment. It supports and builds upon the data in the river basin management plans here.
You can find catchments and water bodies of interest using a map or searching by name. You can also view summary information about catchments, and follow links to other useful sites.
Place name: searches for River Basin Districts, catchments and water bodies within a 10 mile radius, by town and local authority ward.
Postcode: searches for River Basin Districts, catchments and water bodies within a 10 mile radius.
Coordinates: searches for River Basin Districts, catchments and water bodies within a 10 mile radius using latitudes and longitude or eastings and northings.
Catchment/Waterbody name: searches for River Basin Districts, catchments and water bodies by name.

Chemical and quantitative classification for groundwater |
Quantitative status
Chemical status
Number of water bodies
Summary of objectives (ecological status or potential and chemical status) for surface water bodies (number of water bodies)
Summary of quantitative and chemical status objectives for groundwater (number of water bodies) including those with less stringent objectives and extended deadlines (blue shaded cells)
Reasons for not achieving good status and reasons for deterioration in this
The table below shows the number of reasons for not achieving good status (RNAGS) and reasons for deterioration (RFD), split by sector.
Issues preventing waters reaching good status
Issues preventing waters reaching good status and the sectors identified as contributing to them are shown in a table in the new summary page.
This table shows the number of confident measures in the catchment.

Its tributaries include the River Linnet, Culford Stream; Cavenham Stream; Tuddenham Stream and the River Kennet. The area is mainly rural, with many small villages and the market towns of Bury St Edmunds and Mildenhall. Land use is diverse with tree belts and woodlands. In the Lark valley the dryness of the soils has limited their land-use and historically there were extensive heaths, Cavenham Heath is the largest survivor and is now a nature reserve.","rbd-hyperlink":"https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/river-basin-management-plans-2015","photoAltText":"River Lark at Bury St Edmunds","id":"3249","wbagg":{"header":["Water body categories","Natural","Artificial","Heavily modified","Total"],"aggregations":[{"Water body categories":"River, canals and surface water transfers ","Natural":3,"Artificial":0,"Heavily modified":9,"Total":12},{"Water body categories":"Lake","Natural":0,"Artificial":0,"Heavily modified":0,"Total":0},{"Water body categories":"Coastal","Natural":0,"Artificial":0,"Heavily modified":0,"Total":0},{"Water body categories":"Estuarine","Natural":0,"Artificial":0,"Heavily modified":0,"Total":0},{"Water body categories":"Groundwater","Natural":0,"Artificial":0,"Heavily modified":0,"Total":0},{"Water body categories":"Total","Natural":3,"Artificial":0,"Heavily modified":9,"Total":12}]},"classificationstatus":{"surfaceWrapper":{"chemical":{"header":[{"color":"#FF0000","type":"Fail"},{"color":"#00CC00","type":"Good"}],"status":{"2016 Cycle 2":{"Good":12,"Fail":0},"2019 Cycle 2":{"Good":0,"Fail":12},"2015 Cycle 2":{"Good":12,"Fail":0}}},"ecological":{"header":[{"color":"#FF0000","type":"Bad"},{"color":"#FFA500","type":"Poor"},{"color":"#FFFF00","type":"Moderate"},{"color":"#00CC00","type":"Good"},{"color":"#0000FF","type":"High"}],"status":{"2016 Cycle 2":{"High":0,"Bad":1,"Poor":1,"Moderate":9,"Good":1},"2019 Cycle 2":{"High":0,"Bad":2,"Poor":2,"Moderate":7,"Good":1},"2015 Cycle 2":{"High":0,"Bad":1,"Poor":2,"Moderate":8,"Good":1}}},"total":{"header":[{"color":"total","type":"#ffffff"}],"status":{"2016 Cycle 2":{"total":12},"2019 Cycle 2":{"total":12},"2015 Cycle 2":{"total":12}}}},"yearandcycles":["2019 Cycle 2","2016 Cycle 2","2015 Cycle 2"]},"measureRnagagg":{"measureRNAGdata":{"data":[{"sector":"Agriculture and rural land management","rfd":0,"rnag":33,"total":33,"measureCount":0},{"sector":"Domestic General Public","rfd":0,"rnag":0,"total":0,"measureCount":0},{"sector":"Industry","rfd":0,"rnag":4,"total":4,"measureCount":0},{"sector":"Local and Central Government","rfd":0,"rnag":8,"total":8,"measureCount":0},{"sector":"Mining and quarrying","rfd":0,"rnag":1,"total":1,"measureCount":0},{"sector":"Navigation","rfd":0,"rnag":0,"total":0,"measureCount":0},{"sector":"No sector responsible","rfd":0,"rnag":15,"total":15,"measureCount":0},{"sector":"Other","rfd":0,"rnag":3,"total":3,"measureCount":0},{"sector":"Recreation","rfd":0,"rnag":1,"total":1,"measureCount":0},{"sector":"Sector under investigation","rfd":0,"rnag":2,"total":2,"measureCount":0},{"sector":"Urban and transport","rfd":0,"rnag":5,"total":5,"measureCount":0},{"sector":"Waste treatment and disposal","rfd":0,"rnag":0,"total":0,"measureCount":0},{"sector":"Water Industry","rfd":0,"rnag":24,"total":24,"measureCount":1}]},"measureHeader":{"Sector":"sector","Number of measures":"measureCount"},"rnagHeader":{"Sector":"sector","RFD":"rfd","RNAG":"rnag","Grand Total":"total"},"measureFooter":["Grand Total","1"],"rnagFooter":["Grand Total","0","96","96"]},"objectivestatus":{"surfaceWrapper":{"tables":{"Chemical status":{"tablename":"Chemical status","header":[{"color":"#FF0000","type":"Fail"},{"color":"#00CC00","type":"Good"},{"color":"#ffffff","type":"Total"}],"status":{"Beyond 2027":{"Total":0,"Good":0,"Fail":0},"By 2021":{"Total":0,"Good":0,"Fail":0},"Total":{"Total":12,"Good":12,"Fail":0},"By 2015":{"Total":12,"Good":12,"Fail":0},"By 2027":{"Total":0,"Good":0,"Fail":0}}},"Ecological status or potential":{"tablename":"Ecological status or potential","header":[{"color":"#FF0000","type":"Bad"},{"color":"#FFA500","type":"Poor"},{"color":"#FFFF00","type":"Moderate"},{"color":"#00CC00","type":"Good"},{"color":"#0000FF","type":"High"},{"color":"#ffffff","type":"Total"}],"status":{"Beyond 2027":{"High":0,"Bad":0,"Poor":0,"Moderate":0,"Total":0,"Good":0},"By 2021":{"High":0,"Bad":0,"Poor":0,"Moderate":0,"Total":0,"Good":0},"Total":{"High":0,"Bad":1,"Poor":0,"Moderate":5,"Total":12,"Good":6},"By 2015":{"High":0,"Bad":1,"Poor":0,"Moderate":4,"Total":6,"Good":1},"By 2027":{"High":0,"Bad":0,"Poor":0,"Moderate":1,"Total":6,"Good":5}}}},"byyears":[]},"byyears":["By 2015","By 2021","By 2027","Beyond 2027","Total"]},"legend":[{"type":"Operational Catchment","color":"#333366"}]}
