Explore Coastal Erosion Risk

This will show you the estimated area at risk from coastal erosion along a stretch of shoreline in the future.

These coastal erosion risk projections are part of the Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) Explorer, which shows planned approaches to managing the risk from flooding and erosion along the coast within individual ‘units’ of shoreline.

How to use:

  • Your search will take you to the location and/or the Shoreline Management Plan units nearest to the place or postcode
  • Select the location or unit of interest to you
  • Use the ‘Customise Map Display’ button to add the coastal erosion risk projections to the map

Disclaimer: Coastal erosion projections are for guidance only. They show areas of land likely to be at risk but do not show the precise future position of the shoreline, nor specific information for individual properties.

Even where defences are present, some risk from storm surges or ground instability may remain.

What this information will tell you about erosion risk

The information we provide shows projected areas at risk from coastal erosion. Erosion is hard to predict, especially into the future. Erosion may happen faster or slower than what we show, and risk may change over time.

Ground instability is especially unpredictable. Within zones of ground instability, land can experience movement at any time over days, years or centuries into the future, or even not at all. For this reason, there is no time horizon specified. The extent of damage or loss to property caused by ground instability depends upon the type and scale of the ground movement. Contact your local authority for more information where there is a risk from ground instability.

The main risk on some parts of the coast is from flooding. In these areas, no erosion risk information is provided. However, coastal processes may still include some erosion or land instability in these areas which may pose a risk to property. More information can be found on the Managing coastal erosion page.
