About this subsection

This part of the SMP includes settlements at Kingsbridge and Salcombe within the Salcombe-KIngsbridge Estuary. The estuary is a Ria (flooded river valley) with a network of creeks including Waterhead, Southpool and Frogmore.

The remainder of this coastal area is largely undeveloped, except for isolated properties and small villages within the estuary, some of which are at risk of flooding. The coast is characterised by cliffs of outstanding landscape and geological and geomorphological value. In places such as East Prawle, extensive rock platforms lie in front of these cliffs. Elsewhere the cliffs jump up from the sea and turn around headlands as they cross over to Bolt Head. The coast includes a series of coves such as Mattiscombe, Lannacombe and Mill Bay.

The entire shoreline is a Special Area of Conservation for its internationally important wildlife. The Salcombe-Kingsbridge Estuary is part of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Site of Special Scientific Interest. To the east of the mouth of the Salcombe-Kingsbridge Estuary the area is designated as the Skerries Bank and Surrounds Marine Conservation Zone.
