About this subsection

This is a short stretch of shoreline lying between the two headlands of Otterton Ledge and Straight Point.

Sediment from erosion of pebble beds in the red cliffs drifts mainly from west to east and maintains the extension of the pebble beach at the mouth of the Otter Estuary, deflecting its mouth. Natural coastal processes are therefore important to the protection of Budleigh Salterton, and the cliffs near the town are a Site of Special Scientific Interest and form part of the UNESCO “Jurassic Coast” World Heritage Site. The Lower Otter Estuary is also the site of habitat creation to restore the natural features of the floodplain. Budleigh Salterton is a locally important tourist and service centre.

Sections of the caravan park at Devon Cliffs and parts of the rifle range at Straight Point likely to be at some erosion risk in the medium to long term.
