About this subsection

This subsection of the SMP includes the towns of Teignmouth, Shaldon and parts of Torquay, including the undeveloped stretches of eroding cliff in Babbacombe Bay. The area includes the mouth of the River Teign, with the town of Newton Abbot at the head of its estuary.

As well as the geological and environmental importance of this shoreline, the mainline railway running along the open coast and northern bank of the Teign Estuary is a key component of infrastructure. Alongside the urban area itself, this is an important driver for investment in defences along the eastern stretch of this area.

Much of the Torquay coast is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and the nearshore area is legally protected as a Marine Conservation Zone.
