Water discharge - what is a water discharge activity permit?

Created: 03 March 2025

In order to protect water quality a water discharge activity permit is required if liquid effluent or wastewater is discharges to surface waters such as rivers or streams, or directly/indirectly to ground waters. Wastewater includes poisonous, noxious or polluting matter, polluting substances, waste matter and trade or sewage effluent. It does not include uncontaminated water such as rainwater runoff.

The permit is specific to the site or location and sets parameters for the water, such as the maximum flow rate, temperature, pH, and chemical composition. The permit requires the operator to manage and operate its activities in a way that minimizes the risk of pollution.
