River Torne Catchment Partnership

Catchment partnership vision

By bringing back life (human & wild) to the Torne we can redefine it as a hard working but reinvigorated landscape and river catchment, alive with biodiversity. We will develop and showcase projects that produce multiple benefits; demonstrating that flood protection, biological and geological diversity are equally important, for both local communities and for river basin planning purposes. We will make messages of flood defence, pollution, ecosystems services and biodiversity meaningful and relevant to all our communities. We will create a network approach to consulting our audiences; providing a simple messaging framework which allows key individuals and organisations to speak directly with their stakeholders with the right information, advice and asks. We will listen to our communities and develop, initiate, and oversee projects which help to deliver multiple benefits for everyone and ultimately drive up the condition and vibrancy of the operational catchment.

Catchment challenges

Current challenges identified by partnership

  • Changes to the natural flow and water levels

Lack of management will lead to flooding due to bowl like nature of the catchment if water levels/flow change

  • Physical modifications

Catchment relies on heavily modified and specially constructed water sources

  • Pollution from waste water

History of poorly performing sewage treatment work

Wider water environment challenges identified by partnership

The partnership have not identified any wider water environment challenges

Future challenges predicted by partnership

  • Pollution from waste water

  • Changes to the natural flow and water levels

  • Pollution from towns, cities and transport

Partnership success highlights 2016 to 2021

One highlight for the Torne Catchment Partnership was the restoration of SSSI wet woodland at Sandall Beat and Cantley Park that took place in 2016. Located to the east of Doncaster, SSSI Sandall Beat and Cantley Park sit within the water body catchment of Hatfield Waste Drain (GB104028064330). The ecological status of Hatfield Waste Drain during Cycle 2 was moderate, the urban diffuse pollution and poor water flow conditions are largely responsible for the classification. This project addressed urban diffuse pollution by improving water flow and creating new wetland habitat to the benefit of water quality in Fores drain. 2 hectares of new wetland habitat and approximately 718m3 of flood storage were created with 110m of pre-planted coir rolls implemented. Through a volunteer survey programme and an interpretation project delivered by local schools, 22 volunteers logged 201 hours of volunteer time and 71 school children engaged. The project involved multiple partners within the catchment partnership, delivered the catchment message and engaged people in the Torne catchment, all while restoring Sandall Beat back to the wet woodland it once was.

Partnership development plans

In the third cycle of river basin management, the Torne Catchment Partnership intends on improving engagement with current partners and recruiting more local organisations with in-depth knowledge of the catchment area. The partnership also hopes to co-ordinate and identify funding options for current partners, to create more opportunities and involvement within the catchment.
