Welcome to the Environment Agency’s
Check for Drinking Water Safeguard Zones (SgZs) and Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs) map.
Drinking Water Safeguard Zones (SgZs) are established to reduce and prevent pollution of water abstracted for drinking water supplies. Safeguard Zone Action Plans set out actions to prevent and avoid water quality deterioration within Safeguard Zones. You can find individual Safeguard Zone Action Plans, including the substances identified as ‘at risk’ on Defra’s Data Services Platform:
Surfacewater Safeguard Zone Action Plans
Groundwater Safeguard Zone Action Plans
If you live or work within a Safeguard Zone you must take extra care when using substances that could cause pollution of water. Check the water protection advice on the Voluntary Initiative or the Amenity Forum website.
Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs) are areas designated as being at risk from agricultural nitrate pollution.
If your land is in an NVZ you MUST follow a mandatory set of rules which require the careful management of nitrogen fertiliser and organic manure. Further information and guidance on the rules is available on gov.uk.
Important: If you farm or manage land, whether or not your land is within a SgZ or NVZ, there are rules you must follow to prevent water pollution. Further information can be found on gov.uk by following the links below.
