Eden Catchment Partnership

Catchment partnership vision

  • See: an enhanced living landscape with wildlife in and around our rivers (like salmon, otters, kingfishers, water vole and water crowfoot); more rivers that wiggle; more wetlands that hum with life; more healthy bogs in the uplands (fewer bare peat patches) with species like cotton grass, cranberry and bog asphodel; more trees and scrub of all ages; lots of hedges and dry stone walls in good condition; more busy insects pollinating our wildflowers.
  • Hear: more delighted voices by the river; more curlews, lapwings and songbirds; the buzz of many insects in summer; less traffic; the sound of septic tanks being emptied regularly.
  • Feel: safe from flooding when it rains heavily; that exploring our beautiful rivers, lakes, streams and countryside is easy for everyone.
  • Live in: thriving communities who respect and love the river from source to sea; where farmers can make a living from nature alongside food production; where everyone tries to reduce their carbon footprint; where every child has the opportunity to go river dipping for mayfly and stonefly nymphs; where everyone appreciates the value that the River Eden gives to our health and wellbeing.

Catchment challenges

Current challenges identified by partnership

  • Pollution from waste water

Protecting water pure enough to support diverse wildlife, high quality drinking water; and is fit to swim in

  • Changes to the natural flow and water levels

Balance high flows for a landscape safe from flooding; with enough for habitats and species and adequate supply

  • Pollution from agriculture and rural areas

Rich wildlife, connected mosaics of natural habitats for abundance and diversity of species, trees, birds, fish and insects

Wider water environment challenges identified by partnership

  • Support Nature Recovery Network and Local Nature Recovery Strategy

Strategic approach working with Cumbria Local Nature Partnership to develop a water management plan in Cumbria

  • Reduce storm overflows and drainage system incidents

Campaigns and public awareness with communities and river users such as anglers about keeping storm drains clear and where to report issues

  • Protect and restore healthy soils and nutrient balance

Working with farming community on water friendly farming, including regenerative agriculture, soil aeration including links to flood agenda

  • Build environmental resilience and adaptation to climate change

Woodlands for Water and England Woodland Creation Offer

  • Removing plastics/litter from the water environment

Engaging with water sport groups including canoeists, anglers, schools on focussed bank and water based litter picks and awareness of wider issues

  • Connecting communities with nature
