    About

The Wear Carboniferous Limestone and Coal Measures groundwater bodies is designated as a drinking water protected area and is used throughout the catchment for small, local, private water supplies. The legacy of coal and metal mining is causing the poor status of this groundwater body. Despite measures to mitigate the effects of the groundwater impact on surface waters, this groundwater body will continue to fail due to widespread pollution. It is technically infeasible to clean up polluted groundwater at such a scale and hence has been given an alternative objective. It is only one of two groundwater bodies in England with an alternatove objective.
