    About

The Manchester and East Cheshire Carboniferous aquifers are mainly secondary aquifers consisting of Coal Measures and Millstone Grit rocks. The aquifers are generally complex and multi layered systems which many people, especially in upland areas, rely on for their private water supply. The aquifers also support springs in the headwaters of the catchments. Historically coal mining was conducted in this area and in some places has altered the groundwater chemistry. In the south of the groundwater body there is a small area of Permo-Triassic Sandstone which is a principal aquifer and is used by United Utilities to provide drinking water.
