    About

The operational catchment lies largely within the Lake District National Park, including Englands largest lake Windermere, and drains via the River Leven into Morecambe Bay. Key species include Sea trout, Atlantic salmon and Artic charr, all under pressure due to a combination of enrichment and increasingly fluctuating river flows / lake levels. Land use is dominated by sheep and beef farming, with a vibrant tourist industry focused around the tourist centres of Bowness-on-Windermere, Ambleside, Hawkshead and Grasmere. There is a significant public water supply abstraction on Windermere and an increasing number of hydro-electric schemes across the catchment.
