      The Lower Mersey Basin and North Merseyside Permo-Triassic Sandstone aquifers are principal aquifers and Drinking Water Protected Areas. United Utilities abstract significant amounts of water to supply public drinking water. Large industrial abstractors also use the aquifer. Some areas of the aquifer, particularly in the Liverpool area, are exposed at the surface making them vulnerable to pollution.
