    About

The Wirral and West Cheshire Permo-Triassic Sandstone aquifer is a principal aquifer and a Drinking Water Protected Area. It is utilised heavily for public water supply and there are also larger industrial abstractions and smaller local supplies which rely on the aquifer. In much of the aquifer water levels are recovering from historical over abstraction. Some parts of the aquifer, such as the mid-Cheshire ridge are particularly vulnerable to any potentially polluting activity as the sandstone is exposed at the surface. There are elevated levels of nitrate within the aquifer in some of these vulnerable areas.
