    About

The Kemble Forest Marble Groundwater Body (GWB) describes part of the Great Oolite geological strata. The Kemble Forest Marble GWB includes the Cornbrash Limestone; the Forest Marble Mudstone /Limestone and also the Kellaways Formation (inter-bedded mudstone and sandstone). The limestone and the sandstone are water-bearing permeable strata and in this GWB the Cornbrash, the Forest Marble Limestone and Kellaways Sand Member are classified as Secondary A Aquifers. The Oolites of the Kemble Forest Marble GWB are exposed at the surface and therefore are susceptible to vertical migration of chemicals, including fertilisers. Most of the Kellaways Sand Member is confined (and hence protected) by the Kellaways Clay Member in this GWB. Secondary A Aquifers are permeable layers capable of supporting water supplies at a local rather than strategic scale, and in some cases form an important source of base flow to rivers.
