    About

The Mardyke has 2 main tributaries: The East Arm which rises near Warley and the West Arm that rises near Ingrave. The 2 tributaries flow South through a rural landscape, joining together at Fen Lane near Bulphan. The river continues in a Southerly direction through South Ockendon & North Stifford, where it becomes increasingly urban in character. It then follows the A13, passing under the M25 before entering the Thames Estuary at Purfleet. The Mardyke supports a healthy fish population, and is particularly important for eels, a protected species in international decline.
