Easton Bavents SWD8.1
Summary management approach
Establish a sustainable defence alignment for the main developed frontages at Southwold, notably the adjoining unit SWD 8.2 Easton Marsh. This will be considered under the Resilient Coasts Project particularly in relation to the issue of outflanking in Easton Bavents. Adaptation of both the built and natural environments is being planned and will be implemented proactively through the Resilient Coasts Project (2022-27) and other initiatives. The intention is that a co-created coastal management plan will be developed at each Resilient Coasts pilot location that will include innovative funding and investment strategies, sustainable defence options if appropriate. This will also include 'Natural Flood Management' for erosion frontages and a suite of land-based planning solutions linked to and informing the local plan. The in-combination effects of localised private intervention will also be considered by the Resilient Coasts Project.
Generic approach assigned to this unit
Management approaches depend on funding and relevant approvals and permissions. Adaptation to coastal change may be needed. If defences are present, some risk from flooding, erosion or ground instability may remain.
Time periods (short (0 to 20 years), medium (20 to 50 years) and long (50 to 100)) are approximate and do not signify precise dates of management transitions.
0 to 20 years (2005 to 2025)
MR6Managed realignmentLocal activity only
Where the overall intention is for a natural shoreline, not to encourage new defences. In some areas, where specified in the Shoreline Management Plan, works to repair or construct short stretches of defence to provide localised protection (such as to a slipway, access point or isolated properties) may be considered by the Local Planning Authority. All works require relevant permissions.
