    About

The Tees estuary sits at the heart of an area dominated by chemical industry, manufacturing and port activities. Large areas of intertidal land have been infilled, with remaining salt marshes and mudflats protected for conservation value. Lustrum, Billingham and Greatham Becks from the north and Stainsby and Marton West Becks join the estuary through the major conurbation in the catchment. Coastal streams flow direct to the North Sea at Hartlepool, Saltburn-by-the-Sea and Skinningrove, with the latter two impacted by historical ironstone mining.
