  3. WFD Cycle 2 mitigation measures assessment classification

WFD Cycle 2 mitigation measures assessment classification

Summary

This dataset is a subset of the "WFD Classification Status Cycle 2" dataset and contains summary data for the element mitigation measures assessment as used in the classification for Ecological status for the water framework directive (WFD). Ecological Potential in artificial and heavily modified water bodies is determined by an assessment of whether measures are properly in place to mitigate the impacts of any modification on the ecology of the water body. If all mitigation measures are in place, the water body has been classified as being at Good Potential. If one or more identified mitigation measures are absent the water body has been classified as Moderate Potential. In both cases, if appropriate biological or chemical classifications are assessed at worse than good then the Potential of the water body is classified by the worst scoring element according to the usual one-out-all-out procedure.

Lineage

The Water Framework Directive classification system is risk based and focuses on where there is likely to be a problem. It uses a principle known as "one out, all out", which means the poorest individual results drive the overall classification for a water body. It reports on over 30 quality elements, grouped into ecological status and chemical status. Ecological status includes physico-chem (e.g. nutrients, pH, dissolved oxygen, ammonia) , biological elements (e.g. phytoplankton, macroalgae, fish, invertebrates) , specific pollutants (e.g. metals and compounds, organic compounds) , hydromorphology (e.g. depth, width, flow, structure). Chemical status is assessed using priority substances, priority hazardous substances and other pollutants that present a significant risk to the water environment.
