WFD Cycle 2 Lake Ammonia Classification
Summary
This dataset is a subset of "WFD Classification Status Cycle 2" and contains classification data for Ammonia in lakes. Ammonia is a decay product of nitrogenous organic wastes and of the breakdown of animal and vegetable wastes. Sewage effluent is a major source, as are agricultural diffuse sources associated with fertiliser application. Ammonia is used in many cleaning products and in fermentation processes. Ammonia data is run through a database that calculates summary statistics (Mean, standard deviation) at each site based on the number of samples taken in the classification period. These statistics are then entered into a calculator tool to generate classifications. Ammonia standards are used for Ammonia classification and they set up the boundaries between the various status levels e.g. High, Good, Moderate etc. The standards are ‘Waterbody’ specific based on the Typology of the lake, the altitude and alkalinity.

Lineage
The Water Framework Directive classification system is risk based and focuses on where there is likely to be a problem. It uses a principle known as "one out, all out", which means the poorest individual results drive the overall classification for a water body. It reports on over 30 quality elements, grouped into ecological status and chemical status. Ecological status includes physico-chem (e.g. nutrients, pH, dissolved oxygen, ammonia) , biological elements (e.g. phytoplankton, macroalgae, fish, invertebrates) , specific pollutants (e.g. metals and compounds, organic compounds) , hydromorphology (e.g. depth, width, flow, structure). Chemical status is assessed using priority substances, priority hazardous substances and other pollutants that present a significant risk to the water environment.
