Anonymised AIS derived track lines

Summary

This dataset contains the anonymised transit line data used to create the UK shipping density grid produced as part of MMO1066. See AIS data processing methodology developed by ABPmer under MMO project number 1066, entitled Mapping UK Shipping Density and Routes from AIS Open Source Data and Methods

Lineage

The MCA supplied 24 weeks (the first 14 days of each month of each year) of type A and type B AIS data on behalf of the MMO to ABPmer for processing and production of the vessel transit lines and vessel density grid. AIS-A is carried by international voyaging ships with gross tonnage (GT) of 300 or more tonnes, and all passenger ships regardless of size. The data contained message types 1, 2 and 3 (position reports). AIS-B is carried by smaller vessels and is aimed at the leisure and fishing sector. This data contained message types 18 and 19 (position reports). The AIS data was decoded and simplified to identify track or ‘transit’ lines which were then plotted using ArcGIS. For full methodology including processing techniques and data outputs please see the MMO1066 report Mapping UK Shipping Density and Routes technical annex. An overview of the process can be found in Figure 3, pg 12. The Ship Type Group (STG) vessel codes are as follows: 0 - Unknown Vessels 1 - Non-Port service craft 2 - Port service craft 3 - Vessels engaged in dredging or underwater operations 4 - High Speed Craft 5 - Military or Law enforcement 6 - Passenger 7 - Cargo 8 - Tankers 9 - Fishing vessels 10 - Recreational vessels AIS Transit Line data for attribution are as follows: Transit_ID: Vessel transit ID used in data processing DateTimeStart: Time and date at start of vessel transit DatTimeFinish: Time and date at end of vessel transit ShipTypeGroup - Ship Type Group (STG) classification ShipLength - Ship Length (m) ShipWidth - Ship Width (m) Draughtx10 - Ship Draught x10 (m x 10) VoyageDataSource - Voyage Data Source TransitLength - Transit Length (m) PositionDensity - Position density code TransitEndReason - Transit End Reason code AISType - AIS Type (A - 1,2,3 or B - 18 or 19) Date - date of start of transit in dd/mm/yyyy format Month - Month (1 to 12) data recorded Quarter - Quarter (1 to 4) of data recorded VTC classification (Stage 2 of AIS Data Processing) and Lloyds List vessel type (Stage 3 of AIS Data Processing) were not carried out on the AIS dataset.
