The Environment Agency licenses industry, business and individuals to carry out certain activities that have the potential to pollute the environment.

Public Registers Online service allows you to search for:

• Environmental permits and licences
• Exemptions
• Waste Carriers, Brokers and Dealers
• Scrap Metal Dealers
• Environmental permits and licences with any available Compliance Assessment Reports (CARs)

Environmental Permitting Regulations

• Waste Operations

  Find Environmental Permits allowing operators to use, recycle, treat, store, or dispose of waste or mining waste. The permit can be for activities at one site or for a mobile plant used at many sites. If available a CAR form will appear on a permit page.

• End of Life Vehicles (ATF Register)

  Find Authorised Treatment Sites (ATF) depolluting and dismantling End of Life Vehicles (ELV).

• Installations

  Find Environmental Permits for industrial installations such as refineries, food and drink factories or those performing intensive farming activities such as large-scale chicken farms. If available a CAR form will appear on a permit page.

• Discharges to Water and Groundwater

  Find Environmental Permits authorising discharges of potentially polluting liquids into or onto the ground, or into the surface waters. If available a CAR form will appear on a permit page.

• Radioactive Substances

  Find Environmental Permits issued to organisations keeping or using radioactive substances or storing or disposing of radioactive waste.

• Waste Carriers, Brokers and Dealers

  Find people or businesses registered as Waste Carriers, Brokers or Dealers, allowing them to transport, buy, sell, or dispose of waste, or to arrange for someone else to do so.

• Waste Exemptions

  Find waste operations exempt from needing an environmental permit. Specific limits and conditions apply.

• Water Quality Exemptions

  Find low risk water discharge and groundwater activities exempt from requiring a permit.

• Scrap Metal Dealers

  Search for people or businesses who trade in scrap metal and are licensed by their Local Authority.

• Enforcement Actions

  Find information about formal cautions and prosecutions carried out by the Environment Agency (contains actions against companies only).

• Flood Risk Activity Exemptions

  Find activities in, over, under or near a main river or sea defence that are exempt from needing an environmental permit.
