Faversham Creek to the Sportsman Pub 4A07A
Summary management approach
Existing defences maintained in short term but with longer term policy to allow controlled managed re-alignment, to allow more flexible and sustainable approach to flood and erosion risk management.
Generic approach assigned to this unit
Management approaches depend on funding and relevant approvals and permissions. Adaptation to coastal change may be needed. If defences are present, some risk from flooding, erosion or ground instability may remain.
Time periods (short (0 to 20 years), medium (20 to 50 years) and long (50 to 100)) are approximate and do not signify precise dates of management transitions.
0 to 20 years (2005 to 2025)
HL3Hold the lineRepair not replace
Where protection is currently provided by coastal defence structures that might be maintained or repaired if funding allows, but not replaced if they fail or reach the end of their design life.
20 to 50 years (2025 to 2055)
MR1Managed realignmentSet back defence
Where the intention is to defend elsewhere in flood plain inland from present shoreline or allow erosion/recession to a defined alignment. New defences might be constructed at that new location if needed. This may involve the creation of inter-tidal habitat.
50 to 100 years (2055 to 2105)
MR7Managed realignmentPlaceholder
Managed realignment or defence activity may apply only to parts of this shoreline. The approach in this location may be especially dependent upon the outcome of further studies, economic assessments, the rate of coastal change or the actions of other asset owners affected by coastal change. As these become clearer, the management intention will be clarified.

All actions are subject to funding and approval, often by other parties than the Lead Organisation shown.
Reference Number | Action Description | Action Lead Organisation | Action Progress Status | Priority |
---|---|---|---|---|
7.6 | Undertake a strategic survey, modelling and review of the hydrology and hydrological management of the North Kent Marshes, seeking to understand existing freshwater inputs and management, predicted changes due to climate impacts and to propose management structures and regimes that would maximise benefits for nature and people. This work would also identify the most important and viable freshwater sites for the future, which should be realigned only as a last resort. | RSPB | Not yet started | Medium-high |
7.3 | Engage with affected parties to enable adaptation to the change in coastline | Environment Agency | On hold | Medium |
7.1 | Realign in long term in accordance with Secretary of State decision to elect a Hold the Line approach throughout medium term. The Development Consent Order at Cleve Hill provides a time limit for the hold the line approach as a minimum of 35 years from final commissioning. At this point, the Environment Agency has to demonstrate readiness to realign and have the consents and funding in place, then the solar farm will decommission. If not, the process is revisited every 5 years until the Environment Agency is ready to realign. | Environment Agency | On hold | Medium-low |
7.2 | Develop a realignment strategy to include investgiating rationale for realignment since the changes to medium/long term approach, determining the standard of protection and location of set-back defences, and establishing the timeframe for realignment. Consider the compliance with SEA Directive 2001/42 EC, the impact on ground water level management, the acceptable modification & management of designated habitat, and outcomes from surveys of proposed realignment area. | Environment Agency | On hold | Medium-low |
7.4 | Explore option to construct set-back defences in the short term (dependant on the outcome of the realignment strategy) | Environment Agency | On hold | Medium-low |
7.5 | Undertake maintenance activities to hold the current defence line in the short term. | Environment Agency | Not yet started | Medium-low |

These management approaches have been approved by the Environment Agency under its Strategic Overview for coastal flood and erosion risk management and are considered to be local policy.
The documents below provide the full SMP adopted locally and approved by the Environment Agency at the time of publication. Some of the information has changed in response to new government policy, new evidence or new work identified.
