Unit

Dunster Beach 7D21

Summary management approach

Continue to provide protection by replacing and maintaining embankment defences along existing alignment, possibly supported by beach recycling and replenishment. Investigate and (if viable) construct, then maintain, a secondary defence embankment inland, and keep the timing of this realignment under review. The secondary defence will then become the main defence.

Generic approach assigned to this unit

Management approaches depend on funding and relevant approvals and permissions. Adaptation to coastal change may be needed. If defences are present, some risk from flooding, erosion or ground instability may remain.

Time periods (short (0 to 20 years), medium (20 to 50 years) and long (50 to 100)) are approximate and do not signify precise dates of management transitions.

0 to 20 years (2005 to 2025)

HL1Hold the lineMaintain/replace

Where protection is currently provided by coastal defence structures or managed beaches, and the intention is to retain a defence along approximately the current alignment. This will involve replacing defences when needed. Defence type, method and standard of protection may be modified over time.

20 to 50 years (2025 to 2055)

HL1Hold the lineMaintain/replace

Where protection is currently provided by coastal defence structures or managed beaches, and the intention is to retain a defence along approximately the current alignment. This will involve replacing defences when needed. Defence type, method and standard of protection may be modified over time.

50 to 100 years (2055 to 2105)

MR1Managed realignmentSet back defence

Where the intention is to defend elsewhere in flood plain inland from present shoreline or allow erosion/recession to a defined alignment. New defences might be constructed at that new location if needed. This may involve the creation of inter-tidal habitat.

18.26Work with relevant organisations, landowners, private defence owners and local communities to develop a plan for long-term sustainable coastal resilience and adaptation to climate change should existing defences not be maintained in the future, building on the appraisal of long-term options in the 2018 Minehead Beach Management Plan. This should include ensuring adequate maintenance of private defences in the immediate future and investigation of longer-term options. 18.85Undertake investigations into a secondary defence line options to reduce risk of backdoor flooding to Minehead. As part of these investigations, investigate the local and wider impacts of the promontory development at Dunster Beach and engage with holiday park and local landowners to establish a funding plan and to consider alternative solutions if funding is not forthcoming. This needs to consider the connection with Minehead and the envisaged secondary defence line. Use the Minehead Beach Management Plan and monitoring to inform future approach, and consider implications for the wider coastal area down to Blue Anchor, to ensure the approaches remain compatible.Pending agreementNot yet startedMedium
18.21Undertake a Strategy Study from Foreland Point to Hinkley Point that includes the Minehead to Blue Anchor shoreline, to determine the best approaches for delivering the Shoreline Management Plan policies and develop a programme of works. Includes defence condition assessment and long term asset planning, secondary defence options, climate change implications, investment plan and roles/responsibilities for different defence assets within the area.Environment AgencyComplete
