Defra Data Services Platform Announcement

Created: 25 May 2023 Updated: 27 June 2023

Date of Announcement:  05 June 2023

Functionality Affected: Data Services Platform (DSP)

Date of Change: Summer/Autumn 2023

The new and improved Data Services Platform (DSP) Service Desk is now operational!

All users who had an account on the previous DSP Service Desk should reregister on this improved Service Desk to allow easy management of requests. This can be done by selecting ‘Log in’ on the top right of the new Service Desk portal. You will need to provide your email address. Then click on ‘Sign up to continue’ to register. Users will continue to be able to submit tickets without a login, if preferred.

All internal Defra users needing to report an issue with the DSP should now do so via the Defra MyIT Service Desk instead of the DSP Service Desk portal.

Announcement

We are excited to inform you that improvements are coming to the Data Services Platform (DSP)!

The DSP is being migrated onto a new and improved platform providing improved functionality and extended data services. The new platform and services will be progressively implemented during this Summer and Autumn.

Changes you will see:

There will be some improvements to the look of the DSP and some of the application interfaces. These changes are designed to make the DSP clearer and easier to use.

The future focus for the DSP will be to concentrate on the provision of data in Open Standards. For spatial data services this will be based on Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Standards, including new OGC API-Features* and Web Coverage Services (WCS). These will be additions to the current OGC Web Mapping (WMS) and Web Feature (WFS) Services.

As a result, ESRI REST and Image services will no longer be available, but you will still be able to download data in common proprietary formats such as MapInfo Tab and ESRI Shapefile. More advice if you are an Esri user.

We are also planning an expansion of our Linked Data APIs which will improve the integration of underlying data to enable wider use.

More details will follow.
