How Do I Use Shoreline Management Plan Explorer (SMP)?

Created 30 January 2024

You can use SMP Explorer to view:

  • Shoreline Management Plan management approaches and actions for each section of coast

  • where changes to management approaches have been made since their adoption and why

  • areas protected for their environmental, historic or landscape importance which must be considered when deciding the approach to managing flood and erosion risk

  • guidance on how Shoreline Management Plans are developed and updated

There are a variety of ways you can interact with Shoreline Management Plan Explorer:

  • You can use the “Search for an SMP by place or postcode” to find the Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) for that area

  • You can navigate through the SMP list or Coastal Group Tab on the landing page

  • You can navigate through the map

Once within the SMP you are wanting to view you can read details about the SMP and its subsections, download the full SMP and any related documents, review actions associated with the whole SMP or action and management approaches at the unit level page. You can also navigate via the related links tab to the SMP associated coastal group websites, plans and strategies webpage and other related webpages associated with that SMP.
