About this subsection

This subsection of the SMP extends 7km from the significant promontory of Brean Down to Anchor Head where Birnbeck Island lies a hundred meters from the coast. Brean Down headland acts as a control point that shelters the mouth of the River Axe and Weston Bay to its north. Weston-super-Mare is an important seaside resort with wide sandy beaches. It is a popular tourist destination with many traditional seaside attractions and a range of local businesses and services.

The River Axe forms part of the Severn Estuary Site of Special Scientific Interest, Special Protection Area for Birds, Special Area of Conservation and Ramsar site. Brean Down is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty form a backdrop to Weston-super-Mare with access into the Bleadon Hills. There is one Scheduled Monument near the River Axe.
