Unit

Yealm Estuary (East Bank - Passage House to Newton Ferrers) 6C23

Summary management approach

The approach supports maintaining/improving existing privately owned defences to minimise flood risk, however this will be dependent on availability of private funding, as any works are unlikey to qualify for public funding.

Generic approach assigned to this unit

Management approaches depend on funding and relevant approvals and permissions. Adaptation to coastal change may be needed. If defences are present, some risk from flooding, erosion or ground instability may remain.

Time periods (short (0 to 20 years), medium (20 to 50 years) and long (50 to 100)) are approximate and do not signify precise dates of management transitions.

0 to 20 years (2005 to 2025)

HL1Hold the lineMaintain/replace

Where protection is currently provided by coastal defence structures or managed beaches, and the intention is to retain a defence along approximately the current alignment. This will involve replacing defences when needed. Defence type, method and standard of protection may be modified over time.

16.191Consider amendments to the management approach wording to highlight that Hold The Line is dependent on private funding sources (as highlighted in SMP chapter 6.3.14), and that a funding plan may need to be investigated if flood risk increases with sea level rise in future.Pending agreementNot yet startedMedium-high
16.184.01Work with relevant organisations, landowners, private defence owners and local communities along this section of coast to develop a plan for long-term sustainable coastal resilience and adaptation to climate change. This will require significant ongoing engagement with key stakeholders and the local community, working with private defence owners to ensure they are undertaking adequate maintenance in the immediate future, and investigation of longer-term options for management and sources of partnership funding.Environment Agency / South Hams District CouncilNot yet startedMedium-low
