The Historic Landfill Sites dataset (HLD) contains details of those sites where the permits have been surrendered or revoked but also includes information collated on older sites from local authorities and other organisations.The data is the most comprehensive and consistent national historic landfill dataset and defines the location of, and provides specific attributes for, known historic (closed) landfill sites. This includes sites that existed before any permitting regimes as well as those permitted sites where the permit has been revoked, ceased to exist or surrendered. Pre-permitting data was provided by local authorities, consultants and British Geological Survey.It includes all relevant historic information for the sites that both local authorities, other organisations and the Environment Agency have collected over the years. The data is also available in ESRI shape file format, with the boundaries digitised from a base scale of 1:10,000.A landfill permit is regulated by the Environment Agency whilst it is effective. After a permit has ceased to have effect, this responsibility is transferred to the local authority. Therefore any issues related to historic landfills should be referred to the appropriate local authority.How is the dataset maintained? We accept applications for landfill sites. Our National Permitting Service determines the application, and if accepted, issues an effective permit for the activity to the operator. After issue local regulatory officers then check that the operator is compliant with their permit conditions and can take enforcement action against them, if necessary, which can include revocation of the permit. When we are satisfied that the site is not causing environmental pollution, the operator can surrender the permit. This can be several years after landfilling activities have ceased.We do not update the information provided by local authorities or other organisations on former sites unless:<ul><li>A member of the public is being adversely affected by publication of that data and they can provide evidence from the local authority that (a) the site is in the wrong location (b) or the site never existed.</li></ul>If reliable evidence is provided we will update our shape files and this dataset.How often is this dataset updated? However, some small areas were collected after this time (2 water bodies captured in 2020). In the attribute table, the ‘YEAR’ field indicates the timing of the photo capture for each feature.The original baseline publication of this data included data from 2006-09, but large areas have been remapped since, and the downloadable version you can access now (published in March 2023) is from 2016-2019. Alongside the <a class="external-link" href="https://environment.data.gov.uk/dataset/6da82900-d465-11e4-8cc3-f0def148f590" rel="nofollow">Saltmarsh Extent and Zonation</a> layer, the Environment Agency now publish a product showing <a class="external-link" href="https://environment.data.gov.uk/dataset/3e8c1f71-0938-442c-ad77-b708f01830f1" rel="nofollow">Saltmarsh Change</a>, which compares the baseline (2006-09) version 1_08 against the most recent extent (2016-19) Version 4_09. The Saltmarsh Change layer shows areas of recent accretion and erosion. Almost 100% of the national extent has been remapped (just 0.02% has not been remapped). This data is available from DEFRA DSP to download.

The analysis is started within 24 hours of the sample being collected and takes a further 24 hours for preliminary results.The data then requires a further 3 days of analysis for a confirmed result. These sample results are then loaded onto our internal databases where the data is validated.This process, if validation passes, takes approximately 5 days after which they are transferred to the Bathing Water Explorer between 4-8 hours later. However, some datasets are only available to certain registered users, others can be accessed only via web services (WMS or WFS), and others are not released at all.If a dataset is not available for you to download, it will probably be due to one of the following reasons:<ul><li>Third-party intellectual property (IP) restrictions. For example, we may have created a dataset that incorporates data from another organisation. Our licence to use this third-party data may restrict who we are able to share it with.</li><li>Sensitive or confidential data that we are unable to share widely. For example, its release may breach legislation and/or pose a security risk.</li><li>Personal data.
