About this subsection

This subsection extends from Berry Head National Nature Reserve near Brixham along the undeveloped open coast cliffs to Kingswear, and both banks of the Dart Estuary to Totnes. The end of this subsection is Blackstone Point, south of Dartmouth Castle, where the coastal orientation turns south-west. The Dart Estuary is a Ria, or flooded river valley, which runs almost dry near Totnes at low tide. Totnes, Kingswear and Dartmouth are popular visitor destinations and support a range of other services and businesses. Erosion rates are generally low in this area with flood risk mainly affecting defended sections of Dartmouth and Totnes.

The Dart Estuary lies within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and South Devon Heritage Coast. It also includes a Marine Conservation Zone.
