Summary management approach

Maintain existing defences to Flushing with some localised realignment where required in the short term, moving toward a more comprehensive managed realignment approach in the medium and long-term in discussion with the community on design. Improve community flood warning system. The defences have been maintained but provide a relatively low standard of defence and frequent flooding has historically occurred, although installation of a flood gate on the slipway opposite the Seven Stars Inn has reduced these occurences. Land use planning should support adaptation to rising sea levels, including roll back of property to facilitate future realignment. Guidance provided in Cornwall Council's recently adopted Climate Emergency Development Plan Document (Feb 2023) provides new guidance and policy and this should also be considered in any updated Neighbourhood Development Planning.

Management approaches depend on funding and relevant approvals and permissions. Adaptation to coastal change may be needed. If defences are present, some risk from flooding, erosion or ground instability may remain.
