Unit

Tresillian 12.3

Summary management approach

Manage risk to the A390, and at the same time aim to increase the intertidal habitat in the area. The river channel has been artificially narrowed as commercial development has encroached on the river channel. The intention is to move infrastructure with as little impact on the commercial properties as possible to enable the widening of the channel. The A390 should be sustainable in it's current position. The adopted SMP policy is either Hold the Line or Managed Realignment in the medium and long-term, depending on investigation into options.

Generic approach assigned to this unit

Management approaches depend on funding and relevant approvals and permissions. Adaptation to coastal change may be needed. If defences are present, some risk from flooding, erosion or ground instability may remain.

Time periods (short (0 to 20 years), medium (20 to 50 years) and long (50 to 100)) are approximate and do not signify precise dates of management transitions.

0 to 20 years (2005 to 2025)

HL1Hold the lineMaintain/replace

Where protection is currently provided by coastal defence structures or managed beaches, and the intention is to retain a defence along approximately the current alignment. This will involve replacing defences when needed. Defence type, method and standard of protection may be modified over time.

20 to 50 years (2025 to 2055)

MR7Managed realignmentPlaceholder

Managed realignment or defence activity may apply only to parts of this shoreline. The approach in this location may be especially dependent upon the outcome of further studies, economic assessments, the rate of coastal change or the actions of other asset owners affected by coastal change. As these become clearer, the management intention will be clarified.

50 to 100 years (2055 to 2105)

MR7Managed realignmentPlaceholder

Managed realignment or defence activity may apply only to parts of this shoreline. The approach in this location may be especially dependent upon the outcome of further studies, economic assessments, the rate of coastal change or the actions of other asset owners affected by coastal change. As these become clearer, the management intention will be clarified.

This should define sedimentation monitoring and other evidence requirements to improve understanding of evolution of Special Area of Conservation (SAC) features over the long term, maintain its condition and determine timescales for managed realignment. Develop an evidence base available for strategic planning and investment in risk management.
