Unit

Truro - Upper Basin 12.4

Summary management approach

Due to the complexity of options in different parts of this unit, the adopted SMP management approach is for either Hold the Line or Managed Realignment throught the lifespan of the SMP. The aim is to balance requirements for continued port operations (including highway links) with environmental sustainability. This is likely to include maintenance of historic quay and wall structures at Town Quay and Lighterage Quay for commercial viability, along with managed realignment options along Garras Wharf, Boscawen, and the sewage works at the mouth of Calenick Creek (where safeguarding internationally important wildlife associated with the Special Area of Conservation may prevent a Hold the Line approach). At Town Quay, there is little scope to realign the seafront apart from on the right bank - an approach providing longer term social and environmental benefits but involving relocation of the supermarket.

Generic approach assigned to this unit

Management approaches depend on funding and relevant approvals and permissions. Adaptation to coastal change may be needed. If defences are present, some risk from flooding, erosion or ground instability may remain.

Time periods (short (0 to 20 years), medium (20 to 50 years) and long (50 to 100)) are approximate and do not signify precise dates of management transitions.

0 to 20 years (2005 to 2025)

MR7Managed realignmentPlaceholder

Managed realignment or defence activity may apply only to parts of this shoreline. The approach in this location may be especially dependent upon the outcome of further studies, economic assessments, the rate of coastal change or the actions of other asset owners affected by coastal change. As these become clearer, the management intention will be clarified.

20 to 50 years (2025 to 2055)
