Unit

Portmellon 8.5

Summary management approach

Repair defences in the short term to manage immediate storm damage impacts, on the basis that long term defence is not sustainable. During the 2020s, appraise options for re-alignment of highway and management of risks to property. The decision on future of highway will be key to how policy here is progressed. Identify potential environmental benefits of realignment to realise multiple benefits to the area from any change. Cornwall Council's recently adopted Climate Emergency Development Plan Document (Feb 2023) identifies Potmellon as a candidate location for adoption of a Coastal Change Management Area within Land Use Planning Policy. This in turn should support the coomunity to identify plans and opportunities to adapt their sewttlement.

Generic approach assigned to this unit

Management approaches depend on funding and relevant approvals and permissions. Adaptation to coastal change may be needed. If defences are present, some risk from flooding, erosion or ground instability may remain.

Time periods (short (0 to 20 years), medium (20 to 50 years) and long (50 to 100)) are approximate and do not signify precise dates of management transitions.

0 to 20 years (2005 to 2025)

HL3Hold the lineRepair not replace

Where protection is currently provided by coastal defence structures that might be maintained or repaired if funding allows, but not replaced if they fail or reach the end of their design life.

MR7Managed realignmentPlaceholder

Managed realignment or defence activity may apply only to parts of this shoreline. The approach in this location may be especially dependent upon the outcome of further studies, economic assessments, the rate of coastal change or the actions of other asset owners affected by coastal change. As these become clearer, the management intention will be clarified.

17.033Develop an adaptation plan (supported by the Sustainable Coastal Communities project for the wider area). Ensure that the future flood risk implications to the community of not restoring the dunes as a more sustainable defence line, and the impact of the caravan park private defences on beach amenity, is communicated clearly as part of the ongoing engagement with the caravan park and wider community. Also clearly communicate the risks to the road if managed realignment is not implemented soon enough, and identify triggers for action. Ensure adaptation strategy included in Settlement strategy.Pending agreementNot yet startedMedium-low
